How ISO Is Governed

The International Society of Obesity operates under a transparent, inclusive governance structure designed to reflect the diversity of the global obesity medicine community while maintaining scientific rigour and institutional integrity.

Governance Overview

Transparent, Democratic, and Science-Led

ISO is incorporated as a nonprofit entity in Montana, USA. Its governance is modelled on best practices from leading international scientific societies, adapted to reflect the global, multi-disciplinary nature of obesity medicine.

Governance authority rests with the General Assembly of members, which elects the Executive Board. Day-to-day operations are managed by the Secretariat, led by the Secretary General. Scientific and clinical strategy is guided by the Scientific Advisory Council, composed of internationally recognised experts across all disciplines relevant to obesity.

All governance documents, including ISO's Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, and Conflict of Interest Policy, are publicly available to all members and accessible upon request by any stakeholder.

How We Operate

Governance Principles

Independence

ISO's scientific positions are determined solely by evidence. No commercial interest can influence ISO's clinical guidelines or position statements.

Transparency

All governance documents, financial summaries, and conflict of interest disclosures are made available to members and published annually.

Inclusivity

ISO actively ensures that its governance reflects geographic, gender, career-stage, and disciplinary diversity across all bodies and committees.

Accountability

Every ISO body reports to the General Assembly. Members have the right to raise questions, submit resolutions, and vote on major decisions affecting ISO.
